Big stage, Volleyball falls to Coyotes in three

A Pentagon arena crowd of 1,800-plus in Sioux Falls, S.D., watched Thursday night as host University of South Dakota stormed to a 3-0 win over Tommie Volleyball. USD won 25-21, 25-11, 25-18 in a Summit League clash held at a neutral site away from campus.
The Coyotes (7-7 overall, 4-1) hit .400 and had 12 service aces as they stayed near the top of the league standings.
Freshman Lauren Galvin had 12 kills and hit .421 for the Tommies (2-14, 1-5). Libby Mattila added four aces and six kills; Carrie Rutledge had 10 digs; and Eva Fitzgerald chipped in 13 assists.
Coach Thanh Pham used 12 players in the match, including eight freshmen and two sophomores.
The Toms play Saturday night in Brookings, S.D., against South Dakota State.
