Women's Tennis tops Cobbers, 'Jackets to open 2020

St. Thomas Women's Tennis scored a 6-3 win over Concordia-Moorhead in their 2020 conference opener Sunday at Eden Prairie Lifetime Fitness.
The Tommies (2-0) then traveled to Lakeville Lifetime Fitness for an evening match against UW-Superior, an scored a 8-1 victory.
Paige McLeod and Taylor McLeod won 8-4 at first singles, but the Cobbers scored a pair of 8-6 wins at No. 2-3 doubles. Paige McLeod won at No. 2 singles and the Toms won four other singles matches with Natasha Hood, Sophia Dahlke, Helen Watkins and Katie O'Connor to secure the victory. Taylor McLeod lost 14-12 in the third-set tiebreaker at first singles.
Against Superior, the McLeod sisters swept singles and doubles, as did Hood and Dahlke. Sarah Willkom and Anna Miller won at third singles.
"The players and coaches came out very flat today in doubles against Concordia, and the results there reflect that," Coach Ken Cychosz said. "But our singles play was just tremendous, and I'm so excited some of our newer players had their best performances.
"The great play carried over to our match with UW-Superior. We made some minor adjustments and won all three doubles matches, and our great singles play continued in the evening.
"We're really excited to start out 3 0 and hope to carry the momentum into next weekend."
St. Thomas plays again next Friday night at St. Mary's.
