St. Thomas Men's Hockey was unable to get its offense untracked in Saturday night's 4-0 home loss to St. John's in MIAC play in Mendota Heights.
St. Thomas (9-8-3 overall, 6-5-1 MIAC) missed an opportunity to improve its conference playoff outlook.
With four games left in the MIAC regular season, just five points separate the second-place team from the seventh-place team. The top five make the playoff field. Augsburg (26 points), Concordia (23), Gustavus (22), St. John's (21), Bethel (20), St. Thomas (19) and St. Mary's (18) hold the top seven spots. Bethel has just two games left to improve its league standings point total, while the other six each have four games to go.
The Tommies were outshot 16-7 in the first period and fell behind 2-0. They outshot SJU 35-9 over the last 40:00 for a 42-25 game margin, but still took a rare shutout loss. The Johnnies killed off all six Tommie power-play tries.
St. Thomas faces eighth-place Hamline in two games next weekend, then closes the league schedule with two games Feb. 21-22 against Augsburg. This Tuesday night, the Toms have a makeup game at St. Scholastica in Duluth.
