Tauer gets 200th coaching win for St. Thomas men

1/22/2020 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

No. 9-ranked St. Thomas Men's Basketball received 44 points from four sophomore guards and pulled away to score an 80-59 road victory in Wednesday night conference play at Macalester.

Ninth-year coach Johnny Tauer won his 200th game with the Tommies. His team stayed one game behind St. John's in the league standings and moved to 15-2 overall (11-1 MIAC).

Tauer (200-49), who guided the Toms to the 2016 NCAA championship, is believed to be just the second Division III men's coach -- and among approximately a dozen NCAA men's coaches at all levels -- to reach 200 wins in less than 250 games.

UW-Stevens Point's Bob Semling posted his 200th victory in his 247th game with the Pointers.

The Scots led 17-16 before the Toms closed the first half on a 21-10 run. St. Thomas shot 49 percent from the floor and had only six turnovers on the contest.

Riley Miller led the Purple with 17 points and six rebounds. Anders Nelson chipped in 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals; Tommy Anderson added 13 points; and Burt Hedstrom closed with 12 points and six boards.

Gabriel Ramos had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Scots (5-12).

St. Thomas has a bye this Saturday and is home to play third-place Augsburg next Wednesday.
