Nothing has come easy this season for Tommie Men's Soccer. But Coach Jon Lowery and his team are breathing a sigh of relief after a clutch play in overtime by junior midfielder Halvor Houg.
Playing into overtime for the sixth time in seven games, St. Thomas ended a rare six-game winless streak with Saturday night's 2-1 road overtime defeat of No. 23-ranked Augsburg.
The Tommies (2-3-3 overall, 1-1 MIAC) were 0-2-3 in overtimes games in September before pulling out Saturday's latest nailbiter.
Houg scored 1:17 into the first sudden-death session -- his fifth game-winning goal in the last two seasons. Jack Barry recorded the assist. The Toms are 8-0-1 in games on Houg's career when he scores a goal.
Troy Louwagie played the final 9:43 in goal to get the victory. Earlier, Jonathan Acevedo scored in the 22nd minute, assisted by George Marty.
The Auggies (4-3-1, 0-2) tied the game on a goal in the 78th minute. St. Thomas had a 17-7 edge in shots (7-2 in shots on goal) and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tommies are home next Saturday to play St. Olaf.
