Sat. Wrap; Baseball loses 1-0; Softball splits; Tennis sweeps

St. Thomas opened its spring break play on the diamond Saturday morning in Florida. Tommie Baseball dropped a 1-0 decision, while No. 24-ranked Tommie Softball split a twinbill with No. 10-ranked UW-Whitewater. Both Tommie teannis teams won Saturday in Hilton Head, S.C.
Baseball
A two-out error in the bottom of the eighth inning scored the game's only run as St. Thomas lost 1-0 to Benedictine (Ill.) in non-conference baseball play in Auburndale, Fla. The Tommies managed just one hit against BU sophomore Ryan Miller, who struck out 12 and didn't walk a batter.
Junior Henry DeCaster pitched all eight innings for the Tommies and allowed no earned runs. DeCaster (1-2) allowed three singles and three walks and struck out nine. He lowered his season ERA to 2.18.
UST's Josh Thorp had a two-out single in the fifth but was stranded.
Benedictine (8-3) has won four one-run games on its spring trip. The Tommies (1-6) have two one-run losses and a 2-0 defeat this season and have scored just 12 runs in seven games.
St. Thomas plays Sunday morning against Thomas (Maine).
Softball
St. Thomas (4-4) split a pair with No. 10-ranked UW-Whitewater (1-1) Saturday in Clermont, Fla., to start its spring-break trip. UST won the opener 5-4 but lost game two in five innings, 9-1.
Jenna Beeso went 2-for-3 to lead a six-hit attack for the Toms in game one. The score was tied 4-4 in the sixth inning when Kaitlyn Massman pinch hit and drew a two-out walk. She stole second base and scored what proved to be the winning run on Rachel Suter's RBI double. UST starting pitcher Hayley Dunning stranded the bases loaded in the fifth inning and retired the last seven batters she faced to close out the complete-game victory.
On Sunday morning, the Toms will play their seventh game thus far against a ranked team when they face No. 4-ranked Williams. They also play UW-Stevens Point.

Men's Tennis
Ben Wait and Sterling Sibley swept their singles and doubles matches to help the St. Thomas men take a 5-4 win over Union (N.Y.) in Saturday's non-conferece match in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Toms overcame an injury to freshman Erich Nuss. Wait at No. 1 and Zach LeVene at No. 5 pulled out three-set victories in singles for UST (4-4).
