St. Thomas went 2-1 in Friday night play in basketball and hockey. Swmming and Diving also was in action in day one of a two-day invitational contested in Rochester.

 

Men's Basketball

The Tommie Men's Hoops ran its season win streak to four with an 85-70 victory over UW-River Falls Friday night at US Bank Stadium.

Freshman guard Anders Nelson scored 24 points and senior Connor Bair added 23 points and 10 blocked shots for St. Thomas (4-1). Nelson also had eight assists, seven rebounds and five steals. Michael Hannon added 14 points and Tommy Anderson had a seson-best eight off the bench

The Toms used a late surge and led 40-30 at halftime after hitting seven treys in the first half. They led by eight in the final 3:00 before extending the lead late on foul shots. UST made 15-of-18 free throws in the second half and outscored the Falcons 33-6 from 3-point range.

River Falls, which dropped to 4-2, converted just 20-of-64 from the floor (2-of-12 in treys). The Falcons stayed close as they sank 28-of-38 foul shots.

Bair made the first basket in US Bank Stadium history, and Michael Hannon sank the first 3-pointer.

Women's Hockey

Senior Kenzie Torpy recorded her fifth consecutive shutout in goal and Demi Cooper scored two goals as No. 8-ranked St. Thomas scored a 2-0 win over host Augsburg.

The Tommies (9-0 overall, 5-0 MIAC) play the Auggies Saturday afternoon on home ice (2 p.m.). Augsburg (5-2-1, 4-1 MIAC) had a five-game win streak snapped.

Torpy has not allowed a goal over her last 329 minutes on the ice. She has six consecutive MIAC shutouts dating back to last season. In posting her 16th career shutout and 53rd career victory, she lowered her season goals-against average to 0.23.

The Tommies ran their unbeaten streak to an NCAA-best 22 games (17-0-5) dating back to December 2017.

Men's Hockey

No. 11-ranked Augsburg scored an insurance goal in the final 3:00 then added an empty-net tally near the finish in Friday's 5-2 win over St. Thomas on the Tommies' home ice in Mendota Heights. The teams play again Saturday night at Augsburg.

The Auggies (8-1 overall, 5-0 MIAC) jumped to a 3-0 lead midway through the game. The Toms scored late in period two on Matt Christian's first collegiate goal. The Toms pulled within 3-2 as freshman Luke Radetic scored with 5:02 to play in regulation time. That was Radetic's fourth game in a row where he's scored a goal.

But Augsburg scored with 2:08 to play to stem the purple momentum.

Cam Burggrabe replaced starter Andrew Rohkohl in goal after 34 minutes. He stopped eight of nine shots the rest of the way for the Tommies (4-4-1, 1-1-1).

Swim-Dive

Eight events were held Friday night in day one of the St. Cloud State Invite in Rochester, Minn. The Tommie women scored 164 points and are in fourth place out of 12 teams. The St. Thomas men are in fourth place out of eight teams with 146 points.
