Fast start, nice win for Women's Soccer

Junior Kaley Roberts scored in the fifth minute, assisted by Malory DeBoom, and No. 16-ranked Tommie Women's Soccer scored a 1-0 win over Knox (Ill.) College in Saturday's first-round game at La Crosse, Wis.
Olivia Elvidge had four saves in goal for the Tommies (19-2). UST had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks on an unseasonably cold day with temperatures in the low 20s.
The Tommies are in the NCAA playoffs for the third year in a row and in the round of 32 for the second consecutive season. They will play Sunday at 1 p.m. here against host UW-La Crosse, a 2-0 winner over Wartburg.
Tommie Women's Soccer has won its last 61 games when it scores first.
"The goal was a fantastic cross by Mallory DeBoom 1-on-1 on the end line, and Kaley Roberts headed it home," said UST coach Sheila McGill. "Knox flooded the midfield with numbers, and most of the game was a midfield battle.
"Our players stayed strong defensively, and with seven minutes left, Olivia Elvidge made a huge point-blank save. The Knox player was 1-on-1 at the six-yard box with Olivia, but she stayed patient and calm and came up with the huge save.
"Overall it wasn't our best combination of attacking, but in the NCAA playoffs, a win is a win, and we are excited for the challenge Sunday to take on La Crosse."
