Frustrating shootout ends season for Women's Soccer

11/11/2018 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

So close.

No. 16-ranked Tommie Women's Soccer nearly rode a stirring comeback wave to victory. But an eventual tie and a shootout loss ended the UST season Sunday in La Crosse, Wis.

UW-La Crosse (18-2-3) seemed to be in control with its two second-half goals. Then Tommie sophomore Kate Heimer led a late comeback in the last 10 minutes that tied the score 2-2.

An eventual 20-minute overtime couldn't produce a winner as play ended in a tie at 2-2. But the Eagles converted 3-of-4 of their shots in the shootout tie-breaker, to 0-of-3 made by St. Thomas, and moves on to the NCAA round of 16 play next weekend.

The Tommies (19-2-1) set a school record for wins and posted the best record for an MIAC women's team in the last 12 seasons. Yet they came up one play short.

Heimer converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute. She later took a pass into the center from Mary Ennis and scored the tying goal in the 86th minute. That was the fourth time this season UST came from behind in a win or a tie.

Olivia Elvidge had five saves and helped stop eight of the Eagles' nine corner kicks.

Coach Sheila McGill had a terrific senior class of seven which closed out its era this weekend. That group -- Tess Baier, Brie Bourdage, Mallory DeBoom, Mary Ennis, McKenna Peplinski, Shelby Stalberger and Emma Theis -- built a 61-15-6 record in a four-year run with three NCAA playoff trips and four of a possible eight MIAC championships (regular-season or playoff).
