Women's Soccer lowers the 'Boom in 5-0 win

10/24/2018 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Senior All-America Mallory DeBoom recorded three goals and and one assist moved past 100 career points and Sarah Pasternak made a career-best 13 saves in Wednesday night's 5-0 road defeat of Augsburg in a battle of MIAC title contenders.

Junior Kaley Roberts added three assists for the Tommies (15-2 overall, 9-1 MIAC), who moved back into the conference lead after falling out earlier in the evening when Bethel won its afternoon game.

The Tommies (27 points) and second-place Bethel (25) play Saturday at St. Thomas (1 p.m.), and the Toms can secure the MIAC championship with a tie or a win. The Royals take the crown with a victory. Both St. Thomas and Bethel secured first-round playoff byes and will host semifinal games next Wednesday.

Augsburg (11-6, 7-3) had a seven-game win streak halted. The Auggies took 25 shots, 13 on goal, and had a 4-2 edge in corners, but were unable to convert on several good scoring chances as they took a rare multi-goal shutout loss.

DeBoom now has 41 career goals and 106 points. Only Jessy Dease (142 points, 1993-96) and Kelly Hudson (109, 1996-97) are above her on the St. Thomas career list. DeBoom passed Hall of Fame player Jane Sandvik (103) to move into third.

DeBoom scored twice midway through the first half, both assisted by Roberts. The Toms broke it open with three goals in a 6:53 span early in the second half as DeBoom scored, Kate Heimer converted a penalty kick, and Brie Liz Luotto scored (assisted by DeBoom) to make it 5-0.

Pasternak's 13 saves were the most by a Tommie goalie since 2006 when Kaisa Erickson charted 14 in a 5-1 loss at Washington (Mo.).

Before Wednesday, St. Thomas was just 3-6-2 this decade against Augsburg, including five one-goal losses.

The Toms felt unlucky on a windy day last Saturday with nothing to show for a lot of shots in losing 1-0 at St. Olaf, ending a 14-game win streak. But more bounces went the Tommies' way on Wednesday night, and they converted. Augsburg took the program's most lopsided home loss since 1999.
