Volleyball claims home opener, reaches 12 wins

Whitney Lloyd, Julia Spacek and Brooke Reichart combined for 29 kills and hit .500 to lead No. 21-ranked St. Thomas Volleyball to a 3-0 win over St. Ben's in MIAC play Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena.
The Toms hit .269 on the match as they won their home opener 25-18, 25-13, 25-18. St. Thomas has won its last 23 matches over three seasons when it hits .240 or better.
St. Thomas (12-2 overall, 2-0 MIAC) hit .269 on the match, led by Spacek (nine kills, .562 attack, three blocks), Lloyd (12 kills, .526 attack) and Reichart (eight kills, .421 attack, three blocks).
Katharine Mallak had 20 assists and nine digs; Ellie Meyer added 18 digs; Madie Kroehler had 16 digs; and Hannah Schwartz chipped in 16 assists and nine digs.
The Blazers (5-6, 1-1), who hit just .053, were led at the net by freshmen Hunter Weiss (11 kills) and Madison Weiss (four blocks).
St. Thomas is home Friday night to face Carleton (7 p.m.).
