Two late empty-net goals helped host St. Mary's hold off Tommie Men's Hockey, 4-1, in the 2017-18 MIAC opening game Friday night in Winona.
The teams close out the series Saturday at 7 p.m. on UST's home ice in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies (1-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC) never led. Benjamin Myers stopped 23 of 25 shots and Tanner Barnes scored a third-period power-play goal, assisted by Jake Ahlgren.
The Toms trailed 2-1 and pulled their goalie with 1:45 left. They had a play developing in the St. Mary's zone, but a UST player had the puck and fell down, allowing the Cardinals to grab the puck and skate to an easy breakaway goal. SMU converted a second empty-net tally moments later.
St. Mary's (2-1, 1-0) outshot UST 27-25.
