MIAC title for Men's Soccer

No. 6-ranked St. Thomas Men's Soccer ended a 20-year conference title drought with a Saturday road win and a tie by contender Macalester late Saturday.
The Tommies (13-0-3 overall, 6-0-2 MIAC) stayed unbeaten with a 2-0 win at St. Mary's and in the process notched their 12th shutout in 16 games in 2016.
They locked up no worse than a tie for the MIAC title with their victory and Macalester's tie at Augsburg 1-1 in two overtimes. The Auggies tied the game with a second-half goal.
Macalester and Carleton currently share second place with 14 MIAC points behind UST's total of 20 with two games left (teams get three for a win, one for a tie).
UST's last conference title in men's soccer was in 1995, a co-championship with Concordia-Moorhead. The men's soccer program's last solo MIAC crown came 25 seasons ago in 1991.
Coach Jon Lowery's Tommies play Tuesday at Carleton, and are home next Saturday to face Augsburg. They need one win or tie -- or one or loss by both Carleton and Macalester -- to take the crown outright.
Mark Heydt and Shae Bottum each had a goal and an assist in a 6:53 span late in the first half to account for both goals on the game. Aidan Hogan improved to 7-0-1 on the season with the shutout in net and was credited with six saves.
Heydt now has five goals and 11 assists over his last 11 games. UST is unbeaten in the last seven games when Heydt scores a goal (6-0-1). UST is 9-0 in games on his career when Bottom scores a goal.
