ST. PAUL – For the third time this season, the St. Thomas softball team split an MIAC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon when the Tommies defeated Hamline University 8-2 in the first game before falling 1-0 in the second game. With today's results, UST is now 21-5 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC, while the Pipers are now 12-6 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Game 1 – St. Thomas 8, Hamline 2
The Tommies came out of the gate to score three runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the top of the third to take a quick 5-0 lead in the first game. The five-run lead gave St. Thomas a cushion it would not relinquish on the way to the win.
Hamline came back to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-2 at the time, but the Tommie women answered with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh to secure the six-run win.
Katie Jo Delisle led the way offensively for UST, going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and a pair of runs scored in the win. Delisle also tabbed a double and a home run. Annie Boyer added a 4-for-4 day from the plate with a run scored.
Kendra Bowe went the distance in the circle for St. Thomas, giving up just four hits and striking out eight in the win. She improves to 11-2 on the year.
Game 2 – St. Thomas 0, Hamline 1
St. Thomas did not enjoy the same offensive output in the second game of the doubleheader, as Hamline pitcher Casey Anderson kept the purple bats at bay. The Tommies tallied eight hits, but could not put them together to score a run. Anderson went all seven innings, striking out four without a walk.
The lone run in the game came in the bottom of the second inning when the Pipers took advantage of back-to-back St. Thomas errors to get on the board.
The run proved to be enough for the Pipers. Despite UST threatening in the fifth and sixth, Anderson was up to the task for the remainder of the afternoon and Hamline recorded its first win over the Tommies in the 15-year tenure of Head Coach John Tschida.
Bianca Peterson and Micaela Trainor each recorded a pair of hits, while Katie Jo Delisle was tagged with the loss in the circle.
The Tommies will next host Saint Mary's for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. After collecting his 799th win today, Tschida will look to pick up win number 800 on Wednesday.
