Weiers powers W. Hoops past Cardinals

2/4/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Senior Maggie Weiers scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half and No. 3-ranked St. Thomas (20-0 overall, 13-0 MIAC) used a 19-1 run in the second half to pull away from the visiting Cardinals (14-6, 8-5) in women's basketball play at Schoenecker Arena.

St. Thomas moved to 9-0 at home and maintained its three-game lead atop the conference standings.

UST has limited 13 of its last 14 opponents to 51 or less points. St. Thomas starters outscored SMU's starters 63-30, and the Toms had just 11 turnovers and posted a 44-31 rebounding advantage.

Katie Stone scored 13 points; Laura Margarit chipped in 11 rebounds, five steals and six points; and Jenna Dockter had nine points and nine assists.

The Cardinals trailed just 17-16 but the Toms closed the first half on a 12-7 run. The Cards whittled the lead to 39-35 with 15:22 to play, but a 19-1 run over the next 7:45, led by 10 points from Weiers, allowed the Tommies to pull away.

St. Thomas is home Saturday to face Carleton (1 p.m.).
