ST. PAUL – One day after the St. Thomas women's hockey team defeated St. Catherine University 4-0, the Tommies settled for a 1-1 tie with the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena. Although UST outshot St. Kate's 36-19, the Tommies could not find the game-winner and move to 6-6-2 overall (5-1-2 MIAC), while the Wildcats are now 4-7-3 (2-4-2 MIAC).
St. Kate's opened the game's scoring midway through the first period. After last night's first goal for the Wildcats was called off, Saturday's score stood, giving St. Catherine a 1-0 lead at 11:02 of the opening frame. Karly Nelson took advantage of a power play opportunity to score her first goal of the year. Mallory Ryan recorded the assist.
It appeared as though the Wildcats would go to the first intermission with the 1-0 lead until Rachel Friberg scored unassisted in the final second of the opening period. The goal tied the game 1-1 and reversed the momentum headed to the first intermission.
Although the Tommies went on to outshoot the Wildcats 21-12 over the next two periods, UST could not find another goal, as the two teams played to a scoreless tie for the remainder of regulation.
Each team registered a pair of shots in the five-minute overtime, but neither was able to find the game-winning goal, as the game ended in the 1-1 tie.
Tommie goaltender Paige Kittelson made 18 saves in a full 65 minutes in net and moves to 3-2-2 on the year. Abbi White tallied 35 saves and moves to 1-2-2 for St. Kate's.
St. Thomas will be back in action again next Friday when it hosts Hamline University at 7:30 p.m., at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
