The St. Thomas women's soccer team played UW-River Falls to a scoreless tie in a double-overtime marathon on Wednesday evening at South Field. It was the first home game of the 2014 season for the Tommies. It was also the first tie of the year, as UST moves to 2-4-1 on the year. The Falcons are now 4-2-2 on the year.
The first 45 minutes revealed just one shot on goal for each squad. Although the Tommies held a 5-3 advantage in shots, each goalkeeper was forced to make just one save apiece.
The second half brought more opportunities for the Purple and Gray. UW-River Falls held a 4-3 shot advantage in the half, but all three Tommie shots were on goal, putting the pressure on Falcon goalkeeper Erica Cimochowski.
UST had a pair of good chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Grace Rath had a chance at the top of the box in the 82nd minute, but her shot was saved. Brielle Bierman had perhaps the best chance of the day in the final minute, but her shot glanced off the right post and the two teams went to overtime.
St. Thomas threatened again in the extra period when Hayley Engel had a look in the 99th minute. However, Engel's try sailed just over the top of the cross bar to extend the game to a second overtime.
Rath and Bierman had chances again in the second overtime, but could not connect as the final seconds ticked off in the scoreless tie.
Tommie keeper Tarynn Theilig saved all four shots on goal she faced in 110 minutes. Her counterpart, Erica Cimochowski, also recorded four saves in the tie.
St. Thomas will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 27th, when the Tommies host Saint Mary's at 4:00 p.m., on South Field.
