Women's Soccer Drops Opener 1-0

The St. Thomas women's soccer team dropped its season opener by the score of 1-0 to UW-Oshkosh on Friday afternoon at Community Stadium in Stevens Point, Wis.
Despite a pair of breakaway chances for the Tommies, a Titan goal in the 10th minute proved to be too much to overcome in the loss. With the result, UST opens the season 0-1, while UW-Oshkosh begins 1-0.
Just one shot was fired before the Titans were able to get on the scoreboard less than 10 minutes into the game. Robyn Elliott started the play, sending the ball up the left side to Amanda Baalke. Baalke did the rest, finishing inside the far post to give her team the 1-0 lead.
"We were sitting back in our defensive zone a little too much in the first 10 minutes," mentioned Head Coach Sheila McGill. "We didn't step well enough and gave up the goal, which ended up being the difference."
The Tommies had chances to score following the goal. A pair of breakaway opportunities did not bounce St. Thomas's way, as the Tommie women could not capitalize and proceeded to suffer the hard-fought 1-0 decision.
For the game, the Titans fired six shots compared to five for the Toms.
"We didn't end up with the result we wanted, but I think we can take a lot of positives from today," stated McGill. "We are a young team that is still learning to play together. More and more often we are starting to see things click with the personnel on the field. We are getting better every day, which is fun to see."
St. Thomas will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on UW-Stevens Point at Community Stadium. Kick off for that game is set for 2:00 p.m.
