The St. Thomas women's soccer team snapped its five-game unbeaten streak on Wednesday afternoon in Moorhead, Minn. The Tommies fell at the hands of 13th-ranked Concordia College after allowing the only goal of the game in the 38th minute.
With the loss, UST drops to 5-5-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers improve to 10-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play.
Concordia scored the game's lone goal at the 37:30 mark in the first half. Libby Fransdal sent a long drive over the head of St. Thomas goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig's head and into the back of the net to score the eventual game-winner.
Aside from the goal, Theilig was everywhere, making big save after big save. The sophomore ended the game with eight saves, all but keeping the Tommies in the game.
St. Thomas was unable to get much going on the offensive end, as the Cobbers outshot UST 14-4 in the game. Concordia also held the advantage in shots on goal with a count of 9-3.
Despite her strong performance, Tarynn Theilig was tagged with the loss and drops to 5-5-1 on the year. Concordia keeper Elizabeth Bitzan was awarded the win and improves to 10-1-1.
"We didn't play our best today, but we battled and were right there with a good Concordia team," said Head Coach Sheila McGill. "Tarynn did a great job keeping us in the game with some great saves, but we needed to play better as a whole to win today."
The Tommies will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Gustavus Adolphus College at South Field. That game is set for a 1:00 p.m., kickoff.
