Women's soccer picks up 3-1 win over Gustavus

10/11/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

The St. Thomas women's soccer team picked up a 3-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon at South Field.  Three first half goals helped the Tommies improve to 6-5-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the MIAC.  The Gusties drop to 1-8-3 overall and 0-4-2 in league play.

The Tommie women jumped out to an early lead when senior Morgan McConachie got the scoring started in just the second minute.  McConachie's drive from the top of the box found its way past Gustavus goalkeeper, Caroline Olson, and into the back of the net to give St. Thomas a 1-0 lead.  Taylor Sabrowski recorded the assist on the goal, which was McConachie's fifth of the season.

Junior Sydney Presley added to the St. Thomas lead when she scored her fourth foal of the year in the 33rd minute.  Presley chipped the shot over the Gustavus keeper and across the goal line to extend the Tommie lead to 2-0.  Taylor Skorik was credited with the assist on the play.

Just 19 seconds later, Presley notched her second goal of the game thanks to an assist from Kari Solheim.  Presley gave her team a 3-0 lead heading into the break and concluded what would be St. Thomas' final goal of the contest.

Gustavus got on the scoreboard midway through the second half when sophomore Maddison Ackiss scored her eighth goal of the season in the 59th minute.  However, it was too little, too late for the Gusties, as the Tommies clamped down defensively and secured the win.

For the game, the Tommies held the upper hand in shots (9-4), shots on goal (6-3), and corner kicks (3-0).

Tommie keeper Tarynn Theilig was tested just three times and made two saves in the win.  She now improves 6-5-1 on the year.  Gustavus goalkeeper Caroline Olson suffered the loss in a three-save effort.

St. Thomas will be back on the field on Tuesday, Oct. 14th, when the Tommies travel to Collegeville, Minn., for a match up with Saint Benedict.  That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m., start on the Saint John's Practice Field.
