Women's soccer falls 2-0 to No. 21 Saint Benedict

The St. Thomas women's soccer team fell at the hands of Saint Benedict by the final score of 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Collegeville, Minn. The Blazers scored a pair of second half goals within two minutes of one another to take the win. With the result, the Tommies drop to 6-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the MIAC, while Saint Ben's improves to 12-2-0 overall and 6-1-0 in league play.
Saint Benedict outshot the Tommies 5-3 in a first half that yielded a scoreless tie heading to the break. The Blazers also held a 4-1 advantage in shots on target, but St. Thomas goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig was up to the task each time, stopping all four shots on goal.
Saint Ben's took advantage of two of its three shots on goal in the second half. The Blazers scored two goals within two minutes in the second half to seal the win.
Alyssa Hoffman scored the first goal in the 57th minute thanks to an assist from Gracie Vaughan. Megan Lenz followed scored a minute and a half later to add the insurance goal. Hoffman contributed again on Lenz's goal, this time with an assist.
The Tommies were able to get off five shots, two of which were on goal, in the second half. The Tommie women also saw a shot hit the crossbar, but could not muster a goal in the 2-0 loss.
For the game, Saint Ben's held a shot advantage of 11-8, including a 7-3 mark in shots on goal. The Blazers also recorded six corner kicks to St. Thomas' four.
St. Thomas keeper Tarynn Theilig was tagged with the loss after making five saves and moves to 6-6-1 on the year. Her counterpart, Heather Kaluzniak, was awarded the win in a three-save effort.
The Tommies will be back in action again on Saturday, Oct. 18th when they travel to La Crosse, Wis., to take on UW-La Crosse in a non-conference contest. That game is set for a 5:00 p.m., start.
