La Crosse, Wis. – The St. Thomas women's soccer team defeated UW-La Crosse 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match up. After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the half, the Tommies scored four goals in the second half to capture the victory. With the win, St. Thomas improves to 7-6-1 overall, while UW-La Crosse drops to 3-5-5.
Kelly Denk put the Eagles on top in the early going with her third goal of the year. Denk's goal came unassisted in the 14th minute and gave UW-La Crosse the 1-0 lead.
The score proved to be the only one in the first half, as the Eagles took the 1-0 lead to the locker room at halftime. Although St. Thomas was unable to score in the opening 45 minutes, the Tommies held an 11-3 shot advantage at the break, which included a 4-1 mark in shots on target.
UST wasted little time getting on the scoreboard after the break. Just three minutes into the second half, Brielle Bierman tied the game with her third goal of the year. Bierman's goal was assisted by senior Taylor Sabrowski.
UW-La Crosse answered with a goal just a minute and 10 seconds later, but it was all St. Thomas after that. The Tommies came back to score three unanswered goals and take the win.
Kari Solheim got the Tommie women started with her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute. The goal tied the game and gave UST the spark it needed.
Bierman followed with her second goal of the contest and fourth of the season to take a 3-2 lead. Bierman's goal would eventually prove to be the game-winner, as the Tommies would not give up the lead.
Hayley Engel capped the scoring in the 86th minute. Engel's fourth goal of the season came unassisted and served as an insurance goal for the Tommies, who held on for the two-goal victory.
For the game, St. Thomas enjoyed a healthy 22-10 shot advantage, which included an 11-3 count in shots on goal. UW-La Crosse notched seven corner kicks, compared to four for St. Thomas.
Tommie goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig was awarded the win after making one save and improves to 7-6-1 on the year. Eagle keeper Ashley Tracy made seven saves in the loss and drops to 2-5-5.
St. Thomas will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 22nd, when the Tommies host UW-Eau Claire in their final non-conference test of the year. That game is set for a 4:00 p.m., start at South Field.
