ST. PAUL – The St. Thomas women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 tie in double overtime against UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday afternoon at South Field. After trailing 1-0 going into halftime, the Tommies scored midway through the second half to force the tie in their final non-conference contest of the year. With the draw, St. Thomas moves to 7-6-2 on the year, while UW-Eau Claire is now 4-9-2.
The Blugolds struck first in the 23rd minute of the game. Tara Dennehy put a high-quality shot on net that lead to a diving save by St. Thomas goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig, but she could not hang onto the rebound. UW-Eau Claire's Caroline Henderson took advantage of the loose ball and buried it in the back of the net to put her team on top 1-0 in the early going.
Although the Tommies took more shots than UW-Eau Claire in the half (7-5), they could not get one past Blugold keeper Rachel Griffiths, who made three saves in the first 45 minutes.
St. Thomas found its equalizer in the 67th minute when Morgan McConachie scored her sixth goal of the year. McConachie drew a penalty in the box and finished off the penalty kick to tie the game 1-1.
From there, neither team was able to put a shot on target for the remainder of regulation, sending the two squads to overtime.
In the two 10-minute extra periods that followed, neither team could get much going offensively, as there were just two combined shots taken. UST registered both shots, but only one was on goal, which resulted in a Griffiths save and force the draw.
Tommie keeper Tarynn Theilig registered three saves in the tie and moves to 7-6-2 on the season. Her counterpart, Rachel Griffiths notched four saves and is now 1-3-1.
St. Thomas will be back in action on Saturday, when it travels to Northfield, Minn., to take on St. Olaf. That game is set for a 1:00 p.m., start.
