NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's soccer team defeated St. Olaf College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Melby Field.  After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Tommies came back to score a pair of unanswered goals in the second half to take the win.  St. Thomas improves to 8-6-3 overall and 6-3-0 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf drops to 5-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.

The Oles got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Ashley Kimmell in the 30th minute.  Kimmell received a helper from Kajsa Brindley on the goal, which was her first of the season.

St. Olaf took the 1-0 lead into halftime before the Tommies came roaring back in the final 45 minutes.  Freshman Brielle Bierman tied the game nearly six minutes after the break when she buried one from straight away.  Bierman's fifth goal of the year was assisted by Victoria Vargas.

Just four and a half minutes later, senior Kelsie Sargent nailed the eventual game-winner from the right side to take the 2-1 lead.  Bierman assisted on the goal, which proved to be the final score of the afternoon.

Although the Oles managed to put up two more shots, one of which came on goal in the 88th minute, they could not get the bounce they needed as the Tommies stood strong.

For the contest, St. Thomas held a narrow shot advantage of 7-6.  It was a tale of two halves in the shot count.  After St. Olaf controlled the first half in the category with an advantage of 5-1, the Tommies came back to post a 5-2 edge in the second.  The Oles also racked up five corner kicks compared to zero for UST.

Tommie keeper Tarynn Theilig made two saves on the afternoon, and improves to 8-6-2 on the year.  Her counterpart, Ruth Hesse, also made two saves in the losing effort for St. Olaf.

St. Thomas will be back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 29th when it hosts Carleton College for the final home contest of the regular season.  That game will kick off at 3:30 p.m.
