Women's soccer wins third straight

The St. Thomas women's soccer team defeated Hamline University by the score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at South Field.  With the win, the Tommies run their unbeaten streak to five games, winning each of their last three.  St. Thomas improves to 5-4-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the MIAC, while Hamline drops to 6-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.

The Tommies jumped out to a lead early when Hayley Engel scored her third goal of the year.  Taylor Sabrowski dropped the ball off for Engel, who did not let it go to waste, burying it in the back of the net to score what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

The Pipers had numerous chances to score, but to no avail, as Tommie goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig was up to the task at every turn.  Theilig ended the game with five saves compared to just two for her counterpart, Erin Urbanowicz.

Both of Hamline's best scoring chances were turned away by diving saves by Theilig, who was seemingly everywhere on Sunday afternoon.

For the game, Hamline outshot the Tommies 13-9, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on target.

Theilig was awarded the win and now moves to 5-4-1, while Urbanowicz drops to 3-4-0 on the year.

The Tommie women will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 8th when they travel to Moorhead, Minn., to take on Concordia College.  That game is set for a 1:30 p.m., start.
