Second-half run lifts W. Basketball

Senior forward Taylor Young scored nine of her 15 points in a game-closing 20-5 run in the final 8:00 as No. 19-ranked St. Thomas used defense to outlast host Augsburg, 55-38, in Wednesday's MIAC women's basketball play in Minneapolis.
The Tommies (12-3 overall, 10-2 MIAC) remain tied for second place, one game behind first-place St. Mary's.
Maggie Weiers had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Kelly Brandenburg had 10 points and nine rebounds.
UST made 16-of-18 free throws while Augsburg converted just 8-of-17 at the line. The Toms had only eight turnovers, built a 35-30 rebounding edge and helped pressure the host team into 16 turnovers.
UST trailed 18-12 late in the first half at was still behind 19-18 at halftime. The game remained close until the Tommies used a game-closing 11-0 run in the final 3:03.
St. Thomas is home Saturday to face St. Catherine.
