Softball sweeps Blazers, now 16-0 in league

No. 11-ranked St. Thomas ran its season win streak to 17 with Saturday's 9-4, 4-1 sweep of St. Ben's. The Toms were the vistors in the games moved to UST's South Field.
The Tommies (29-5 overall, 16-0 MIAC) pushed their home-field win streak to 41. They play two Sunday at Hamline and two on Monday against Gustavus to close the regular season.
Sophomore Kendra Bowe allowed one earned run in 8 2-3 innings on the day and junior Emily Gregory slugged her 27th career home run.
Breezy Bannon and Bowe combined on a one-hitter in game two. UST trailed 1-0 after four innings as CSB took advantage of two fielding errors to score in the fourth. But Tisa Phinney's sac fly in the fifth tied the game. UST went ahead to stay on RBI singles in the sixth inning from Erin Mussett and McKenzie Wergin, and an RBI single in the seventh by Jenna Hoffman. Bowe worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning.
In game one, Gregory and Brenna Walek homered to key a 16-hit attack. Kimmy Hassel went 4-for-4 and Hoffman and Gregory each had three hits.
