The No. 5-ranked Tommie women's basketball team couldn't convert a game-winning possession in the final 20 seconds and lost 77-76 to No. 11-ranked Whitman (Wash.) in Friday's season opener at the Whit Classic in Spokane, Wash.
Whitman, an Elite 8 playoff team last March which returned several starters, made 63% from the field in the second half and took 32 free throws to just 15 for the Tommies. UST converted all 15 free-throw tries and shot 48% from the field but couldn't ice the win in the final 2:00.
The Toms had an 11-point lead in the final 7:00 slip away. Taylor Young made two free throws with 33 seconds left, but Whitman went back ahead with two free throws with 20 seconds left. Young missed an off-balance shot at the buzzer for the win.
Anna Smith had 13 of her 17 points in the second half. Young and Katie Stone each had 14 points and Maggie Weiers had 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out.
The Tommies play host Whitworth - another NCAA playoff team last winter -- Saturday at 8 p.m. Minnesota time to close the trip
