The No. 15-ranked Tommie men's basketball team couldn't convert a game-tying possession in the final eight seconds and lost 80-77 to Pomona-Pitzer in Friday's season opener in Claremont, Calif.

Xavry Moss scored 24 and John Weiss had 18 points, nine boards and five assists for the Sagehens, who returned four starters from a 14-10 finisher last season.

UST used a 16-5 run during the final 5:00 and climbed within two points at 77-75 with 1:56 to go. But the Toms converted on just one of four possessions in the final 90 seconds. Cortez Tillman missed a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final seconds for the Tommies.

Conner Nord had 18 points and seven rebounds, while. Zach Riedeman, Taylor Montero and Marcus Alipate each scored 10 points.

The Toms trailed by nine at halftime and fell behind by 14 before trimming that deficit to one early in the second half.

UST posted a 28-13 advantage in bench points, shot 48 percent from the field and made 17 of 21 at the line but was only 4-of-16 from 3-point range.

St. Thomas closes the trip with Saturday's 9 p.m. game (Minnesota time) against Occidental.
