Men's Soccer edges Santa Cruz on late goal

9/2/2012 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

W, 2-1
UC-S. Cruz (M), September 02, 2012

Sophomore Kevin Carrick's first collegiate goal -- a tie-breaking score in the 82nd minute -- lifted the St. Thomas men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over UC-Santa Cruz in Sunday's non-conference game in St. Peter.

The Tommies won the four-team Gustavus Invite title with the best overall won-loss record (1-0-1). UST junior defender Kit Weaver was named MVP of the All-Tournament team.

Junior Nick Rapisarda scored just 24 seconds into the game. The Banana Slugs (1-1) tied the game with a goal in the 25th minute, but Carrick scored the go-ahead tally as senior Brett Day was credited with the assist. Day had a goal and two assists in the two weekend games.

Junior Jace Leiferman played the first 45 minutes in goal. Soph Mitchell Wolff took the victory as he allowed no goals in the last 45 minutes.

"Today was a great result for our team and reflected the culture we are in the process of building," said UST coach Jon Lowery, who posted his first victory in his inaugural season as head coach. "We dealt with a lot and learned even more about ourselves. Today we saw first what a team effort can produce -- I'm proud of the guys and look forward to getting back to work tomorrow in preparation for Northwestern on Tuesday."

St. Thomas opens its home season Tuesday at 4 p.m. on the South Campus field (Cretin and Grand Avenues) against Northwestern College.
