Baseball bats alive in road sweep of Cobbers

Dylan Thomas and Tim Kuzniar each had five hits on the day as No. 2-ranked St. Thomas ran its school-record baseball win streak to 21 games with Monday's 9-5, 16-2 road sweep of Concordia-Moorhead.

The Tommies (30-4 overall, 18-0 MIAC) reached 30 wins for the 15th time in the last 17 seasons and swept their 15th consecutive conference twinbill.

St. Thomas is the first conference baseball team to start a season 18-0. It will attempt to close out the MIAC's first 20-0 regular season when it plays its last two games Saturday afternoon at Gustavus. St. Thomas had 19-1 finishes by its 1996 and 1999 championship teams.

UST had no errors and never trailed on the day. In game two, senior lefty Bryce Gapinski moved to 25-5 on his career with five shutout innings. In game one, freshman Greg Clute retired all nine batters he faced in the final three innings of relief.

UST had five home runs on Monday to match its total from its first 32 games. St. Thomas also had eight doubles, and 14 different Tommie batters contributed to the team's 31 hits. Charles Bruchu and J.D. Dorgan each had four hits. Dorgan's three-run homer helped UST build a 6-1 lead in game one. Thomas raised his season average to .477 with a 5-for-7 day.
