Softball zips to 9-1 win over ranked Blugolds

Freshman Kendra Bowe pitched four scoreless innings in relief as St. Thomas scored a 9-1 win over No. 14-ranked UW-Eau Claire (6-4) Thursday in non-conference softball play in Clermont, Fla. The game was halted by the eight-run rule after five innings.
The Tommies had 11 hits and never trailed. They took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with four two-out singles, the latter an RBI hit by Kristin Bigelbach. Gen Duffy went 3-for-3 and Erin Mussett added two hits. A two-run third inning gave UST a 3-1 lead, and a sixth-run fourth inning pushed the margin to eight.
The Blugolds' lone run came in the second with two walks, a sac bunt and a sac fly.
In the second game of the day, Fontbonne (Mo.) rallied from a 3-0 deficit and edged the Tommies, 6-5. St. Thomas (11-5) had 13 hits and left 13 runers on base. Alyssa Dunrud and Kimmy Hassell each had three hits.
Hassell's two-out double in the last of the seventh pulled UST within 6-5 but Gen Duffy flew out to the warning track to end the game. A sinking liner with two outs in the fifth inning scored three runs for the Griffins.
UST plays Babson and Wellesley on Friday to close out the trip.
