Pitching fuels Baseball's sweep of Oshkosh

Three Tommie pitchers limited UW-Oshkosh to one earned run and seven hits on the day while striking Player pic out 20 in Tuesday's 3-1, 7-1 doubleheader sweep in non-conference baseball play at the Metrodome.

No. 23-ranked UST (6-2) got a complete-game, four-hitter by senior Bryce Gapinski in game two, as he fanned 10 with no walks and outdueled Titan All-America pitcher Luke Westphal. Gapinski improved to 21-5 on his career and 2-0 this season.

In game one, Tommie sophomore transfer Steve Maher improved to 3-0 on the season as he allowed one hit and one walk with no earned runs and five strikeouts in five innings.

Player pic Dylan Thomas struck out the last five batters he faced to get the save. Thomas allowed a one-out single and double in the sixth inning to put the tying runners aboard, but used a pair of strikeouts to escape the threat.

Sophomore Ben Podobinski went 5-for-7 with four runs on the day to lead the Tommies. UST had 12 hits in game two as J.D. Dorgan had a two-run double and Charles Bruchu added three hits.

The Titans (1-3) were hurt by throwing errors in each game.

St. Thomas travels to Florida next weekend to start a eight-day, 10-game series. Oshkosh, which scored 16 runs in a Monday night split with Hamline, comes back to the Player pic Metrodome next weekend to play doubleheaders against St. John's and Northwestern.

In 57 innings this season, Tommie pitchers have recorded 67 strikeouts and just nine walks, with a 2.68 ERA. Podobinski has 15 hits, eight runs and seven stolen bases and is batting .517 in eight games. First-year middle infield starters Sam Miller and Jon Kinsel have no errors in 54 defensive chances.
