Winter Haven, Fla. -- The No. 23-ranked Tommies got off to a good start on their annual Florida trip shutting out Rensselaer Poly 5-0 on Saturday at Chains of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven.

Junior RHP Mark Dominik started for the Tommies (7-2) and worked five scoreless innings. He scattered five hits with one walk while striking out three. It was the fourth career win for Dominik, who was making his fifth career start and his first since May of 2011. The Hill-Murray grad needed only 52 pitches to make it through the first four frames before running into trouble in the top of the fifth. Kyle Lavigne and Tanner Boucher quickly opened with back-to-back singles for RPI and with no outs. John Licht relieved Dominik. After getting cleanup hitter Eric Kozak to strikeout, Licht picked off Lavigne at second base, and then got Art Levenson to fly out to left ending the the Engineers scoring threat.

The Tommies manufactured their first run in the third inning when Ben Podobinski reached on an error with one out and then moved to third on an overthrow by starting pitcher Drew Korte. Charles Bruchu then followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop. In the fourth the Tommies struck again, this time with three straight singles by Nick Reichert, Tim Kuzniar and Sam Miller. With one out Reichert scored on a wild pitch by Korte to make it 2-0. Ryan Gerber then brought home the Tommies' third run with an RBI groundout to second, and junior shortstop Jon Kinsel followed with an RBI single to center to make it 4-0.

Licht, a senior captain, was masterful earning a four-inning save allowing only one hit and striking out two. It was Licht's fourth career save in 35 overall appearances, and the third save by a Tommie hurler this spring. So far this season Licht has been perfect in two relief outings working 5.2 innings having only allowed two hits and striking out three.

Offensively, Kinsel went 3 for 4 on the day with two RBI, his first career multi-hit and multi-RBI performance. Gerber was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Tim Kuzniar 2 for 4 with two runs scored, J.D. Dorgan 1 for 4, Nick Reichert 1 for 4 with a run scored and Dan Reichert was 1 for 5.

The Tommies are back in action Sunday morning with a 9 a.m. doubleheader in Auburndale against regional rival UW-Stevens Point. Live stats for tomorrows double-header can be found here: http://athletics.uwsp.edu/sports/2012/3/12/BSB_0312121627.aspx

Game Notes...The Tommies are (3-4) versus Stevens Point dating back to 2008, the last win UST had over the Pointers was during the 2009 NCAA Regionals in Oshkosh, Wis., when Licht fired a complete- game shutout to stave off elimination in the losers bracket... The Tommie pitching staff's 5-0 shutout victory over RPI on Saturday was their second shutout through nine games and drops their overall team earned run average to 2.31... Tommie hurlers have allowed more than three runs only once this year (8-3 extra inning loss to Whitewater on March 8th)... Chris Olean picked up his 70th career victory as Head Coach of the Tommies (70-29) a .707 career winning percentage...Drew Korte, brother of former Tommie J.B. Korte, was the starting pitcher for RPI on Saturday. Korte is a Junior Engineering major who has played both pitcher and catcher for the The Engineers.
