First-place St. Thomas (10-2-3 overall, 6-0-1 MIAC) stayed unbeaten in the MIAC men's soccer race with Saturday's 2-2 overtime tie with visiting St. John's (6-5-3, 3-2-1).
Nick Rapisarda scored early in the second, half, his 11th goal of the year, to tie the game 1-1. The Johnnies took a 2-1 lead on Zane Heinselmann's goal in the 78th minute, assisted by Alex Neiderloh. But UST tied the game on Mark Smith's goal in the 88th minute, assisted by Brett Day.
There was no scoring in 20 minutes of overtime.
"We started very well and I thought it was our best 25 minutes to date," said UST coach Jon Lowery. "However, we didn't finish, and St. John's did very well to even the game. In the end, it was a classic MIAC affair with two good teams going at it for 110 minutes. We continue to show tremendous resolve and tying it late again showed our trust in the game plan and flat out determination."
St. Thomas plays next Saturday at Gustavus.
