Baseball sweeps Cards with tough pitching

Kris Edwards and Matt Schuld combined on a two-hit shutout as St. Thomas made the most of one hit in Tuesday's 3-0 game-one baseball victory at St. Mary's.
UST completed the sweep with a 14-1 victory in game two. The Toms stroked 21 hits, including a 4-for-4 game by Tom Wippler and a 4-for-5 day by John Bauer. Wippler had a two-run homer and Bauer drove in three runs.
Matt Nelson allowed one run and two hits over six innings and improved 5-0 on the season.
St. Thomas (23-5 overall, 10-4 MIAC) gave up just one run and five hits on the day.
In game one as UST scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, aided by four walks, a hit batter and three errors. Tayler Rahm had an RBI single in the sixth.
Edwards, who climbed to 6-2 on the season, had a no-hitter through five innings but allowed an infield hit and a single to right field to open the sixth. After a bunt moved the runners up, Edwards got two outs. Schuld pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two strikeouts for his first save of the season.
In four MIAC starts, Edwards is now 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA.
