Radcliffe, Marquardt lead Softball sweep of Pipers

Sydney Marquardt went 5-for-7 and Marta Radcliffe threw 13 2-3 shutout innings on the day to lead No. 21-ranked St. Thomas to a 1-0, 6-2 softball sweep of Hamline in Wednesday's MIAC games at UST's South Field.
The Tommies (22-6 overall, 9-1 MIAC) used late-inning offense to pull out both games.
They scored game one's only run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth of game two to erase a 2-0 deficit.
Alison Wright, who had a 20-game hitting streak halted in game one, went 2-for-3 in game two. Her liner off the fence drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning of game two. Wright now has 237 hits in 167 games and needs three to pass Michelle Wong and become the MIAC's career hits leader.
Radcliffe, who improved her career MIAC pitching record to 33-2, threw a four-hit shutout in game one.
In the bottom of the sixth, Marquardt doubled off the fence in center. Pinch runner Alyssa Dunrud took third as she slid under a tag after a ball bounced in the dirt. Dunrud was set to score on a sacrifice fly to right when Rachel Tondryk's hit was dropped, and Dunrud trotted home with the game's only run.
In game two, Radcliffe came on with UST trailing 2-0 and a runner on third base. She shut down Hamline on five hits and no runs the rest of the game.
The Pipers (10-12, 4-4) used an error on a dropped third strike, a single and Heidi Larsen's double to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Larsen took third base on a wild pitch, Radcliffe came on in relief. She walked a batter but Larsen was picked off third, and UST excaped with no more runs allowed.
The Toms had two singles to start the fourth but couldn't score. In the fifth, Kimmy Hassel singled sharply off the foot of the second baseman and later scored from third on a two-out error. Marquardt followed with a doulble to tie the game 2-2, and Wright added an liner off the fence for an RBI single.
UST added three insurance runs as they had five singles in the sixth. Cassie Smith singled off the third baseman's glove and later scored on a throwing error, and Chandran Duffy's had a two-run single.
The Tommies play Saturday at home against St. Catherine (1 p.m.).
