Sophomore Fritz Waldvogel returned two first-quarter punt returns for touchdowns to help the No. 22-ranked Tommies (1-0) streak past Macalester (0-1), 54-14, in Saturday's non-conference football play at Macalester Stadium. It was the 94th meeting between the Summit Avenue neighbor schools.
The Toms had four touchdowns of 50-plus yards on the day as they beat Macalester for the second year in a row and 15th consecutive time in the series.
St. Thomas, which raced to a 34-0 halftime lead, had no turnovers and two 100-yard rushers. The Toms outgained the Scots in total offense, 489-236.
The UST defense allowed just one touchdown, although the Scots' sophomore RB T. Joe Loiselle rushed 21 times for 103 yards and a TD. Mac also scored on a blocked punt and return.
The 54 points were the most scored by St. Thomas in a season-opener in 95 years. The 1914 Tommies beat a team from UW-Oshkosh 67-0 in their first game.
Tommie junior Ben Wartman rushed 16 times for 117 yards -- his eighth 100-plus yard running day in his last nine games.
UST sophomore Colin Tobin had 114 yards on 10 carries and has 351 rushing yards in his last three games. Sophomore QB Greg Morse had an eight-yard TD pass to senior tight end Jake Friederichs and finished with 115 yards while completing 8-of-19. Sophomore QB Dakota Tracy came on and completed 5-of-8 for 49 yards, including a short TD pass to freshman tight end Jon Nelson.
Waldvogel had punt returns of 74 and 68 yards for TDs and now has three of his 11 career punt returns to the end zone. He finished with 201 yards of total offense on five touches -- an 18-yard catch, a 15-yard run, and punt returns of 74, 68 and 38 yards.
UST junior Alex Hass had a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Tobin had a 61-yard scoring run.
Sophomore LB Willy Baregi had a forced fuimble and six tackles to lead a balanced defensive effort.
The Tommies started the season with a road victory for just the second time in their last 10 tries covering 20 seasons. The Toms were 1-7-1 in their previous nine openers played away from home.
UST now has 27 touchdowns in its last five games dating back to last October, including eight by Wartman, five by Waldvogel, four by Friederichs, and three by Tobin.
St. Thomas has a bye week next weekend and opens its MIAC and home seasons Sept. 19 against St. Olaf.
