Freshmen pitch Baseball to sweep of Cards

Freshmen pitchers Ryan Fahey and Charles Bruchu earned victories in their first MIAC starts and Tom Wippler continued his strong play with a 4-for-5 day as No. 15-ranked St. Thomas swept Saturday's conference baseball twinbill from visiting St. Mary's, 5-0 and 9-3.
The Tommies (19-5 overall, 8-0 MIAC) moved into a tie for the conference lead with Gustavus. The Toms have won 11 in a row vs. MIAC foes dating back to last year's postseason playoffs. UST is now 6-0 on its home diamond this season.
In the opener, Fahey threw a six-hit shutout in a game that was just 1-0 into the fifth inning. He struck out three and walked just one. SMU had one runner tagged out at home, hit into one double play and had two runners thrown out stealing. The Toms built a 3-0 lead by scoring on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and on Matt Pexa's RBI single.
In game two, Bruchu allowed seven hits, one walk and three runs and struck out six. He was staked to an early 5-0 lead.
Wippler went 2-for-2 in game one and was hit by pitch. and was 3-for-4 in game two with three RBI. In his last four games the sophomore has 10 RBI and seven runs while hitting 10-for-14.
Senior Chris Bullis drove in two insurance runs in game one with a sixth-inning double. He also had a hit in game two to run his hitting streak to 14 games. Dan leslie also had a hit in each game and has hit safely in all seven MIAC games he's played.
Tommie freshman Tim Kahle had a triple, double and single and drove in four runs in game two.
St. Thomas has home doubleheaders Monday vs. Bethel and Tuesday vs. Hamline. Both start at 2:30 p.m.
