Backup guard Emily Nelson scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the final 14:00 to key a comeback as the visiting Gusties (14-7 overall, 13-5 MIAC) held on for a 55-52 win that knocked the host Tommies (15-6, 14-4) out of the conference lead.

Katie Layman had 15 points and seven rebounds for Gustavus, which shot just 36% from the floor but made 14-of-18 foul shots.

Jessica Katch and Carrie Embree each scored 15 points for the Tommies, who had 20 turnovers and made just 6-of-12 free throws. DeJurnett Prioleau had nine points and nine rebounds and Andi Olson added nine points.

St. Thomas rallied from a nine-point first half deficit to build a 38-32 lead with 13:21 to play. Nelson scored nine points in a 13-3 run to put Gustavus ahead to stay. Nelson sank two free throws with :09 to go to push the lead to 54-50.

After Katch's layup with :04 left cut the lead to 54-52, Jess Vadnais was fouled. She made the first but missed the second foul shot. The Tommies' desperation shot to tie from half court bounced off the front of the rim.

The Tommies play Wednesday at Augsburg and next Saturday at St. Catherine.
