Andrew Panchenko's power-play goal with 51 seconds left let the No. 5-ranked St. Thomas forge a 3-3 tie with host Hamline in MIAC men's hockey play Saturday night at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
The Tommies (14-5-2 overall, 8-3-1 MIAC) were on the verge of being swept in an MIAC set for just the fifth time in 199 weekend series dating back 25 seasons.
The Pipers, who won 5-4 Friday night, scored three unanswered goals for a 3-1 lead. But Tom Knutson scored with 8:55 left to cut the lead to 3-2. Midway through a late penalty, Panchenko scored to knot the score at 3-3
UST killed off one power play in a scoreless overtime. The Toms had a 36-25 advantage in shots after posting a 36-17 advantage last night.
The Toms now have 17 points with four MIAC games left; Bethel lost Saturday night at St. Mary's and has 19 points with two games left; Hamline has 16 points with four games left; Gustavus, which plays Sunday at St. John's, has 16 points with three games left. UST can still earn at least a share of the title with seven points.
