Men's Hockey caps weekend sweep of SMU

Alex Arnason scored two goals and Tyler Chestnut posted his fourth shutout of the season as the No. 8-ranked St. Thomas men's hockey team stayed in the MIAC lead on winning percentage with Saturday's 5-0 victory over visiting St. Mary's in MIAC play in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies (16-5-2 overall, 10-3-1) clinched a playoff spot and movced to 21 points in the MIAC race. They can secure a home playoff game and top-two finish with two points next weekend vs. St. Olaf and can win the championship with a sweep.
Bethel won 2-1 and leads the MIAC on points with 23, but the Royals' conference season is over and they have a bye next weekend. Hamline led Augsburg 4-3 in the third period and with a win gets to 20 points. the Pipers finish with two games vs. St. John's.
UST freshman Rob Johnson had a goal and an assist to cap a five-point weekend and Nick Pernula score a goal -- his third of the weekend. UST led 1-0 them scored three goals in a 5:01 span late in the second period.
The Toms play Friday night at St. Olaf and Saturday night at home vs. the Oles.
