Sophomore guard Joe Scott scored a game-high 24 points to lead No. 23-ranked St. Thomas to an 80-72 road victory over Augsburg in MIAC men's basketball play Wednesday night in Minneapolis.
The Tommies (10-2 overall, 6-1 MIAC), who have won four in a row, opened up a 1 1-2 game lead in the MIAC race with the victory and Gustavus' loss at Concordia-Moorhead.
Augsburg (3-8, 1-5) had 21 turnovers to just seven for UST, and the Tommies sank 54% from the field (32-of-59). Thirteen Tommies played and 11 scored. Brett Tuma scored 11 points and Al McCoy had six points and five steals, both off the bench.
Coach Steve Fritz won his 498th game in his 28th season as Tommie head coach.
The Toms saw a 15-point late first-half lead trimmed to 37-29 at halftime, and to five early in the second half. But Scott sank two treys to push the lead back to 11. The Auggies never got closer than six thereafter.
St. Thomas plays Saturday at Gustavus (3 p.m.) then plays four consecutive at home, where it has a 25-game win streak vs. MIAC opponents.
