The St. Thomas men's basketball tem saw its conference lead shrink to one-half game with Saturday's last-second 59-58 loss at Gustavus. The No. 23-ranked Toms saw their win streak end at four.

The Tommies (10-3 overall, 6-2 MIAC) sank nine 3-pointers but made only 5-of-10 at the foul line. They now have just a half-game lead on Gusties and Carleton, both 5-2 in the MIAC.

UST shot just 37% in the second half and couldn't hold a 15-point lead with 13:00 left. An 18-0 Gustue run helped build a six-point lead, but Teddy Archer's 3-point basket with 58 seconds to play put the Toms ahead 58-57. After a Gustie turnover on the press, UST missed a shot but Lonnie Robinson got an offensive rebound with 13 seconds left.

The Toms still led by one point, but with 12 seconds to go they missed a 1-and-1 free throw. The Gusties drove the court and scored the game-winning points on Tyler Kaus' basket with :01 left. Kaus had 14 points off the bench and Trevor Wittwer scored 24 for the Gusties.

Gustavus, which has won eight of its last nine, shot 67% in the second half and 55% on the game to help offset a 32-24 rebounding edge by the Tommies.

Joe Scott had 16 points and Archer scored 12 for the Tommies.

UST returns home to play its next four games -- Wednesday vs. Concordia, Jan. 21 vs. St. John's; Jan. 23 vs. St. Mary's; and Jan. 26 vs. St. Olaf.
