Men's Basketball holds off Oles, 75-68
1/26/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Junior center Al McCoy had a season-high 18 points off the bench and the host Tommies (14-3 overall, 10-2 MIAC) ran their home conference win streak to 29 with Saturday's 75-68 victory over the visting Oles (7-10, 5-7) in MIAC men's basketball at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
The win and Gustavus' home loss to Augsburg put the Tommies back into sole possession of the conference lead by one game with eight MIAC games to go.
UST's Joe Scott added 15 points and seven rebounds, and Lonnie Robinson chipped in 12 points and four assists.
Bobby Hunter scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half for the Oles. Chad Norberg scored 13 points and Steve Banick had 10 points and eight assists.
The Tommies, who improved to 7-1 in January, never trailed but could never shake the Oles. Both teams shot 51% from the field but UST had a 35-29 rebounding advantage, had a 24-12 bench scoring edge, and outscored St. Olaf 14-8 in free throws.
St. Olaf tied the game at 31-31 but UST used a 11-2 run over the final 3:44 of the first half to build a 42-33 halftime lead. St. Olaf pulled within 67-65 with a basket with 2:44 remaining, but baskets by Robinson and Scott over the next 90 seconds pushed the lead back to six.
St. Thomas is at Hamline this Wednesday night.
