Women's Hoops wins again, 79-74

Senior Carrie Embree had 16 points, 15 rebounds and five assists to lead the first-place Tommies (10-3 overall, 9-1 MIAC) to their seventh consecutive conference victory, 79-74, over the visiting Wildcats (6-7, 4-6) in women's basketball Saturday at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
Six players scored in double figures for the Tommiess, who have won 10 in a row at home dating back to last season. St. Thomas is 6-0 in January, all over a 15-day stretch.
The Toms made 11 of 12 free throws in the second half to hold off the Wildcats. Both teams had near identical stats for rebounds and turnovers, and both shot 44% from the floor.
Rachel Berglund and Jessica Arechigo each scored 14 points for St. Catherine, which led only once all game at 17-16.
CSC pulled within 73-71 in the final 4:00 and 77-74 with 1:06 to go, but Katch's basket with 41 seconds left pushed the margin back to five.
Embree posted her fifth double-double in seven games. Chelsea Wirtz scored 12 points, Sheena Porter had 11 points and four assists, Jessica Katch had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jazmin Townsend and Jenni Gillard each scored 10 points off the bench.
St. Thomas plays Monday night at second-place St. Benedict.
