Tommies get women's, men's sweep of Cobbers

Women: UST 75, Concordia-Moorhead 71

Senior Carrie Embree had 16 points and 12 rebounds to help the first-place Tommies (9-3 overall, 8-1 MIAC) snap a seven-game winning streak by the Cobbers (7-5, 6-3) in MIAC women's basketball play Wednesday night at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies have won five games in 12 days and maintain a one-game lead near the halfpoint point of the conference race. Sophomore guard Sheena Porter-Wrzos made 6-of-6 free throws in the final 38 seconds to help hold off Concordia. the Cobbers trimmed as 16-point deficit down to two points with :03 remaining, but Porter Wrzos, who finished with 13 points and six assists, iced the game with two free throws with :01 to play.

Cobber senior Melanie Hageman had 14 of her 16 points in the second half.

Men: UST 74, Concordia-Moorhead 65

B.J. Viau had 14 points to help first-place St. Thomas (11-3 overall, 7-2) secure career win No. 499 for Coach Steve Fritz in Wednesday night's MIAC men's basketball game at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies ran their MIAC home win streak to 26 dating back to January 2006 and kept their half-game lead over Gustavus atop the MIAC standings. UST made only 1-of-6 at the foul line in the first half and led just 34-32 at halftime. But they made 19 of 25 free throws in the second half.

Lonnie Robinson had 12 points and Joe Scott scored 11. Al McCoy had nine points to help UST post a 26-15 advantage in bench scoring.

Concordia's Luke Linz had 13 points and teammate James Baldwin had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
