Freshmen Regina Horak and Caitlin Carrigan scored goals as St. Thomas posted a 2-0 women's soccer win over Elmhurst (Ill.) Sunday in Bloomington, Ill. It was the first college coaching win for UST new mentor Sheila McGill.

Horak scored in the 13th minute with an assist from freshman Lexie Fisher. Carrigan scored in the second half off a corner kick from Carrie Lauterbach.

Senior Kaisa Erickson was in goal for the shutout and had two saves.

The Tommies (1-1) open their home season Wednesday vs. UW-LaCrosse (4 p.m.).

Sunday's win helped ease the sting of Saturday's 2-1 loss to Illinois Wesleyan in which the Titans scored the game-winning goal with 49 seconds to play.

?The second game of a weekend is always tough,? stated McGill. ?We started off a little slow, but our momentum built throughout the game and, for the second game in a row, we got great contributions from the entire team.?

The Tommies opened up the scoring midway through the first half when four freshmen combined. Rachel Thompson sent the ball forward to Emma Welton, who laid a first-time pass to Lexie Fisher, who sent the ball through to Horak. Horak belied her young age by calmly and confidently dribbling around the goalkeeper and sending the ball into the back of the net with her left foot.

In the second half, the Tommies' Betsy Messner, Jess Ricter and Steph Paasch controlled the middle of the field and had the Blue Jays on their heels. UST gave themselves a little breathing room with about 15 minutes to play. Lauterbach struck a corner kick out in front of the goal that found Carrigan's head. Carrigan buried the ball in the back of the net to celebrate her first collegiate goal.

Erickson recorded two saves until she was knocked out of the game on a collision following a save with about 12 minutes remaining. Freshman Amanda Domeier of Park Cottage Grove recorded her first collegiate minutes and helped the Tommies to their first shutout of the season.

?It's great to get our first win of the season," McGill said. "The girls deserved more Saturday, but today they fought hard, went out and took it."
