Freshman Emma Welton and sophomore Erin Sprangers scored goals to lead host St. Thomas to a 3-2 victory over UW-LaCrosse in non-conference women's soccer play Wednesday at UST.
On a hot, humid day, the Tommies broke to a 3-0 lead then held off the Eagles' late charge. Senior Kaisa Erickson was in goal for the Tommies (2-1) and made three saves. Amanda Clark had four saves for LaCrosse (1-1). UST posted a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
LaCrosse's defense inadvertently kicked in the first goal in its own goal in the game's ninth minute for a 1-0 UST lead.
Welton scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute for a 2-0 lead. Sprangers made it 3-0 in the 51st minute as she took a pass from Carrie Lauterbach and drilled a shot that caromed off the keeper's hands into the top of the net.
LaCrosse had two slick goals in the 56th and 68th minutes. Amy Cory dribbled down field and pushed a shot over Erickson's head to make it 3-1. Ramsey Wayenberg took a pass from Sarah Harrington and scored from 25-feet out, again just above a leaping Tommie keeper.
The Tommies are home Sunday to face UW-Stevens Point (1 p.m.), and are home Tuesday in their conference opener vs. St. Benedict.
