Volleyball tops LaCrosse in five; win streak to 11

No. 9-ranked St. Thomas ran its volleyball winning streak to 11 matches with Saturday's five-game victory over No. 24-ranked UW-LaCrosse. The Tommies (11-2) capped a 4-0 weekend at the LaCrosse tournament with a 30-21, 27-30, 30-24, 24-30, 15-12 win over the previously-unbeaten Eagles (11-1).
UST also scored a three-game win over Illinois Wesleyan, and on Friday night beat No. 6-ranked Carthage in four games and Lakeland in three games.
Tommie junior Katie McCaffrey and freshman Emily Foster made the all-tournament team. In 14 games on the weekend, McCaffrey had 55 kills and hit .396 and added 14 blocks, including 40 kills and 11 blocks in nine games vs. Carthage and UW-LaCrosse. In 15 games Foster had 202 assists and 59 digs. In the LaCrosse victory, she had 63 assists, six kills and 26 digs.
Coach Thanh Pham's team plays its first home match of 2007 on Wednesday when it faces No. 11-rated Concordia-Moorhead (7 p.m.).
The Toms' 11-match winning streak equals one built by the 2005 Tommies, and is one off a St. Thomas 12-game win streak recorded in 1999.

Friday's Results
In a Friday night battle of top-10 ranked Division III volleyball teams, No. 9-ranked St. Thomas posted a four-game win over No. 6-rated Carthage at the UW-LaCrosse tournament. UST won 30-32, 30-18, 30-23, 30-23. Carthage (8-1) was 29-5 last season. The Tommies (9-2) have won nine in a row.
Earlier Friday, UST topped Lakeland in three games (30-19, 30-23, 30-24).
The Tommies close the tourney with two Saturday matches -- vs. Illinois Wesleyan (noon) and vs. No. 24-ranked LaCrosse (2 p.m.).
